Bhubaneswar: The eyes of an elderly man and his wife were donated today by the deceased couple’s family to a private hospital here, following their death. The couple died yesterday in a freak road mishap that occurred at Palasuni Chhak under Mancheswar police limits in Bhubaneswar.

“It was a wish of our parents, hence we decided to donate their eyes and fulfill their wish,” the couple's two sons said.

The elderly man identified as Umesh Panigrahy (66) and his wife identified as Nalini (62) were killed as a truck ran over them at Palasuni Chhak when they were crossing the road early in the morning.

It is pertinent to mention here that Nalini’s body was found lying on the road at the accident site. Whereas, the speeding truck dragged the elderly man's body up to around a kilometre and it was later spotted on the national highway near Satya Vihar locality of Bhubaneswar.

The elderly couple belonged to Anandapur under Subalaya police limits and Biramaharajpur subdivision of Subarnapur district. They were on their way to Puri for a Darshan of Lord Jagannath on the occasion of their 39th wedding anniversary when they met with a fatal accident.
