Berhampur, Aug 11:

Sadar police have arrested the deceased girl’s father Soura Jena and her mother and have forwarded them to court.  Both have confessed to the murder, police said.

According to police sources, Soura had fixed their daughter’s marriage with a boy and her engagement ceremony was over. Despite that the deceased maintained relationship with another boy. On knowing about her affair with another boy, the girl’s parents had tried to persuade her to sever her relationship.

Having failed in their attempt, on August 1, the Jena couple bludgeoned their daughter to death with a wooden stump and later cut the body into pieces with a paniki/boti (an iron blade fixed to a wooden plank base used in kitchens in eastern India for cutting vegetables). Later, the couple dumped the pieces in a canal that flows near the village.

“Her marriage was fixed. Her mother found her speaking to another boy over mobile phone. Her mother got angry. She tried to persuade her to sever her relationship with that boy but she didn’t agree. Then we killed her,” said Soura Jena, accused and father of the deceased.

Police had seized the body from the canal on August 4 and was investigating the matter after registering a murder case.

“On August 4, an unidentified body was seen floating in the canal near Barigaon. The parents had murdered the deceased on August 1 and had thrown her body in the canal. We are investigating the matter and trying to find out if any other persons were involved in the crime,” informed Ashok Kumar Mohanty, Sadar Sub Divisional Police Officer (SDPO).
