Parents of 21-month-old brain dead boy donate his organs in Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneswar: In an exemplary act, parents of a 21-month-old boy namely Pratyush donated their son’s organs after he was declared brain dead at the SUM Hospital here on Saturday.

As per reports, Gouri Shankar Panigrahi and Sharmistha Panigrahi decided to donate their son’s organs after he suffered septic shock and was declared brain dead at the private healthcare facility.

Pratyush was admitted to the hospital about two weeks ago. The baby was diagnosed with meningitis. Born in July of 2022, he had recurring health issues.

Following the parents’ request, the hospital contacted the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), which then coordinated with the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO).

A team of doctors from AIIMS Bhubaneswar harvested Pratyush’s liver, which was flown to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi, for a baby awaiting transplantation.

The kidneys were sent to a local hospital for another patient’s transplant.
