Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stones of the to-be-redeveloped Puri and Cuttack railway stations in Odisha, at 12.30 PM tomorrow.

“Puri in Odisha is a historic city and a renowned tourist hub. The redevelopment of Puri railway station will bolster tourism prospects and position it among the leading destinations for religious tourism,” vice-chairman of RLDA Ved Parkash Dudeja earlier said.

The existing railway station in the pilgrimage town was previously envisaged as a multimodal transit hub in line with international standards with segregation for entry and exit, baggage security, check-in area, information centre/enquiry centre and art gallery, Dudeja had added.

Puri railway station is an NSG-2 category terminal station under the Khurda division of the East Coast Railway (ECoR) zone. It is one of the busiest stations of the zone which has eight platforms handling 52 trains daily, including mail, express and passenger trains.

In 2018-19, Puri handled a daily footfall of almost 16,680 passengers.

About 1,287 kilometres (800 mi) of the East Coast State Railway was built and opened to traffic during the period from 1893 to 1896. It necessitated then to construct some of the largest bridges across rivers like Brahmani, Kathajodi, Kuakhai, Mahanadi and Birupa.
