Bhubaneswar: A special POCSO court in Odisha’s Puri district today sentenced a man to twenty years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor boy and attempting to kill him around six years ago.
The POCSO court convicted accused Juma Khan of Pipli area in Puri district under Sections 363, 364, 325, 307 and 377 of the IPC and Section 6 of the POCSO Act.
As per the case records, Khan had lured the minor boy, aged around eight, to a mango orchard at Pipli on March 25, 2018 and sexually assaulted him. He later tried to kill the boy with the help of stone.
Pipli police had launched a search operation to trace the minor boy after receiving a missing complaint from his mother.
The victim had been found in an unconscious state from an abandoned building near Pipli bypass. The police had launched a probe into the incident and arrested the accused.
The court awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) to the convict under Section 6 of the POCSO Act, 2012. It also imposed a penalty of Rs 20,000 on him.
The POCSO court sentenced the convict to 10 years of RI under Section 377 of the IPC and imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on him.
The convict was awarded 10 years of RI under Section 307 of the IPC. He was also directed to pay Rs 10,000 as penalty.
In addition to this, the convict was sentenced to five years of RI under Section 325 of the IPC. The court also imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 on him.
Similarly, the court awarded 10 years of RI to the convict and imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on him under Section 364 of the IPC.
Moreover, the convict was sentenced to five years of RI and slapped with a penalty of Rs 5,000 under Section 363 of the IPC.
The imprisonment awarded to the convict under various Sections of the IPC and POCSO Act in the sexual assault and attempt to murder case will run concurrently.
The court also asked the authorities concerned to provide Rs 5 lakh as compensation to the victim.
