Biramaharajpur: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of police was placed under suspension today over an alleged torture of a youth in Subarnapur district. The ASI identified as Santosh Sindria is presently working in Subalaya police station under Biramaharajpur block.

The victim youth was identified as Jagannath Karmi from Tebhapadar village under the Subalaya PS limits.

According to a source, the ASI had detained the victim youth at the PS for nearly sixty hours on the pretext of investigation and tortured him. Jagannath was previously picked up by the ASI in connection with the theft of a tractor plough, that took place in the village. Based on an FIR earlier lodged by one Mahendra Mahalik, the suspected youth was severely beaten and physically tortured.

Jagannath had become critical following the alleged police excess. Even though he repeatedly expressed his innocence in the theft case, he was not spared. When Jagannath’s brother enquired about him over phone and requested to release, the latter was also threatened to implicate in false cases.

Even to the extent, Jagannath was being said that he would be made drink urine as and when he was asking for water to quench his thirst during excessive torture, the FIR mentioned.

Disheartened with this, Jagannath’s brother had previously met Subarnapur Superintendent of Police (SP) seeking justice. Subsequently, Jagannath was released from Subalaya police station.
