Police ASI suspended over charge of extorting money from Ashram seer

Puri: Taking immediate administrative action against a subordinate staff, Puri Superintendent of Police (SP) Kanwar Vishal Singh today placed the Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) under suspension. Allegedly, the policeman identified as Akshaya Mallick had extorted money from an Ashram seer on some pretext.

At around 12 midnight, a tip-off was received that the ASI of a PCR vehicle extorted money. An inquiry was then entrusted to City DSP under the supervision of Additional SP Mihir Kumar Panda. During the probe, prima facie evidence suggested that the allegation was correct. As per the preliminary report submitted by City DSP, the incident had taken place in the pilgrim town on April 13, an official source said.

On getting a distress call at around 11.30 PM on the intervening night, PCR vehicle No-5 led by ASI Mallick working at Sea Beach PS reached the spot. Instead of acting professionally, the cop threatened the caretaker and putting the fear of arresting the seer, Mallick extorted ₹ 7,500 from him.

On perusing the report of City DSP, Sea Beach IIC was directed to initiate criminal proceedings on the ASI. The entire issue has been taken with extreme seriousness. Having zero tolerance for such acts, the ASI was suspended due to dereliction of duty and extreme professional misconduct.

A Sea Beach PS case (No-106/2023, under Section 392 of the IPC) has been registered in this connection. “Preliminary investigation has revealed sufficient evidence against Mallick and he has been arrested by police and would be forwarded to a local court later in the day,” the senior police official stated.
