Bhadrak: Tension prevailed after a police team was held hostage by irate villagers for allegedly carrying out a crackdown at the wrong place and looting valuable assets of a family in a murder attempt case in Bansada tehsil of Odisha's Bhadrak district on Wednesday night.

The two ASIs and five constables were reportedly raiding a place in connection with a murder attempt case but landed up at the wrong place.

The victim, Murlidhar Bilas of Brahmatikiri village, alleged that he along with his wife were sleeping when a team of police from Bansada station raided his house by breaking open the terrace door and windows. The police then assaulted them, and stole gold jewellery worth lakhs along with Rs 1.5 lakh cash. On hearing the family's screams, neighbours reached the spot and detained the police after hearing the allegations of theft and abuse.

As per reports, one Shankar Jena's daughter of Pipala village of Karanpalli panchayat had eloped with a boy. The family searched frantically for her but after being unable to trace her, they approached the boy's friend. The latter, identified as Tapas Nayak, son of Benudhar Nayak, claimed he had no information on his friend's elopement but was beaten up ruthlessly by the girl's family. While he was rescued later in a bleeding and unconscious state, his uncle filed an attempt to murder complaint against 12 people. Acting on it Bansada police registered a case and started investigation.

But instead of going to the accused family's place, police carried out the crackdown erroneously in another village.

They were detained by the locals till reports last came in.

Meanwhile, Bansada IIC Debraj jena said it is true that the raid was carried out at the wrong place but dismissed the allegations of theft by the police team.
