Police SI under Vigilance scanner for taking bribe in Odisha’s Jajpur

Sukinda: A team of Vigilance sleuths today caught a sub-Inspector (SI) of police while accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from the owner of a sand-laden Hyva truck to release it, which was seized yesterday.

The policeman was identified as Nirmal Kumar Senapati, presently working in Sukinda police station of Jajpur district. Later, the SI Senapati was apprehended by Odisha Vigilance.

According to an official source, Sukinda tehsildar Damayanti Sahu had seized the truck from the national highway near Sukinda. She handed over the vehicle to local police for safe custody. A police case (No-124/2023) was registered and a probe was initiated. Driver of the seized truck Prakash Singh from Manoharpur was arrested by the police and also forwarded to court, the source added.

“We had laid a trap to catch SI Senapati red-handed. The cop was taking a bribe from a Hyva truck owner. Following his arrest, he is now being taken to Vigilance Directorate in Cuttack for quizzing and further investigation,” an official said.

Following the trap, the Vigilance team carried out simultaneous raids at the police station and Senapati’s government residence in the town from disproportionate assets (DA) angle, which are underway.

Cuttack Vigilance PS case No-22/2023 U/s-7 of the PC (Amendment) Act, 2018 was registered in this connection. The bribe money has been recovered and seized from the possession of Senapati.
