Bhubaneswar: The Opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) today strongly criticised the ruling BJP Government in Odisha over the deteriorating law and order situation, following the tragic self-immolation attempt by a female student of Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore.
BJD leader Snehangini Chhuria questioned the quality of governance under the BJP-led state Government and demanded immediate intervention from Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi. She termed the incident deeply unfortunate and highlighted systemic administrative failure.
The victim, identified as Soumyashree, an Integrated B.Ed. student, allegedly attempted self-immolation in front of the college principal’s chamber due to prolonged harassment by HOD Samira Kumar Sahu and administrative inaction on her repeated complaints. Her classmates alleged Sahu had made inappropriate demands, issued threats, and warned of academic repercussions if she did not comply.
Despite submitting complaints to both the college principal and local police, no substantial action was taken. Her pleas for justice and protests against the apathy of the administration were reportedly ignored.
Chhuria pointed out that Balasore MP Pratap Sarangi was already aware of the allegations of harassment made by the student, who is also an ABVP activist, as she had previously reached out to him. “What steps did the MP take after being made aware of her ordeal?” Chhuria asked, holding the elected representative accountable for inaction. Sarangi confirmed to the media the student had indeed approached him regarding her mental harassment.
Soumyashree, who sustained 90% burn injuries, is currently in critical condition. She was initially admitted to the Balasore District Headquarters Hospital and later shifted to AIIMS Bhubaneswar for advanced treatment.
In response to the incident, the Higher Education Department suspended Principal Dilip Ghose and HOD Samira Kumar Sahu. Sahu was subsequently arrested by Sahadevkhunta Police.
Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj visited AIIMS Bhubaneswar to check on the student’s condition. He stated, considering the gravity of the incident, a high-level inquiry committee has been formed. “Further action will be taken based on the committee’s report,” the Minister assured.
