New Delhi, Jan 21:

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) today fixed January 23 as the next date of hearing in the case seeking vacation of the stay order granted by the NGT on felling of trees in the proposed Posco steel project area in Jagatsinghpur district near Paradip as the hearing could not be completed today.

The tribunal heard the arguments of Posco’s counsel today.

On January 13, the NGT had postponed the hearing on the petition as it could not be taken up for lack of quorum.

Land acquisition for the project was suspended in May last year after the National Green Tribunal ordered a stay on the felling of trees in the project area. The green clearance granted to the Posco steel plant project by the Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) remains incomplete pending vacation of the stay.

The state government also cannot transfer the additional 1000 acres to the project unless the NGT stay on the forest clearance for the project is lifted.
