Bhubaneswar, May 29:

The people of Odisha today heaved a sigh of relief following the prediction by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) that the state will witness pre-monsoon rains in the first week of June.

While that is in future, there was no let up in the searing heat wave with the sun pounding down relentlessly on the interior districts. The official death toll due to the heat wave has now risen to 17 while the number of reported sun stroke deaths has gone beyond 100.

Coastal areas in the state, however, have had it relatively easier with temperatures falling appreciably in the last three days: by as much as five degrees Celsius at most places.

“The situation is favourable for advance of monsoon to Odisha which is likely to hit the state’s coast by the second week of June. Though there is a possibility of rain at some places in the next 48 hours, most parts of the state will witness pre-monsoon shower between June 2 and 4,” said Dr Sarat Chandra Sahu, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Bhubaneswar.

Referring to the heat wave conditions, he said the condition will continue for next two days in the interior Odisha. However, temperature in these areas will come down to below 45 degrees from May 31 onwards while temperature in coastal districts will also fall by two degrees under the influence of a trough line stretching from Uttar Pradesh to Andhra Pradesh through Chhattisgarh and Odisha.

“There will be appreciable fall in temperature in the state after June 3”, Sahu said.

Meanwhile, a  weather bulletin this evening said 11 places in the state recorded 40 degrees and above with Bhawanipatna as the hottest place with 45.5 degrees.

Temperature remained at 45 degrees and above in Sonepur (45.4), Bolangir (45) and Titlagarh (45).

Places in other areas where the temperature remained at 40 degrees are Angul (42.7), Jharsuguda (43.6), Sambalpur (44.8), Sundargarh (42.5), Hirakud (44.6), Talcher (41.3) and Phulbani (41.7).
