Pregnant woman carried to hospital on cot in Odisha’s Kandhamal, dies on her way

Baliguda: An expectant mother died on her way to the hospital when she was being carried on a cot from Mlauguda village of Gugurumaha panchayat under Kotagarh block in Kandhamal district.

The deceased woman was identified as 31-year-old Sumanti Sukamajhi, wife of Mechu Sukamajhi from the village.

On Friday morning, the pregnant woman suffered pain and was carried up to a distance of more than five kilometers as the village has no motorable road. With the help of an Asha worker, the victim woman was initially taken to Majhiguda and then to a health centre in Judabali.

Later, the expectant mother was shifted to the sub-divisional hospital (SDH) in Baliguda by an ambulance vehicle after her condition deteriorated. Unfortunately, the woman succumbed on the way.

The deceased’s family informed Tumudibandha police about it and subsequently lodged an FIR at Kotagarh police station. Police have registered an unnatural death (U/d) case (No-2/2024) and launched a detailed probe.

Post-mortem of Sumanti’s body was done today morning and was handed over to her family.
