Police has detained a temple priest in Belpahar town in Jharsuguda district of Odisha on allegations of trying to sacrifice his wife and seriously injuring her suspecting her of practicing witchcraft.
According to police compliant Sujata (30) was struck with an axe by her husband Rameshwar Bhoi (45) the priest of Narsingha temple injuring her seriously on Wednesday. He had also kept her confined in a room and was going to sacrifice her yesterday night.
Based on the complaint filed by Sujata’s family police have detained the priest of temple and are questioning him.
According to reports, Bhoi was keeping unwell and used to suspect her family of practicing witchcraft on him to kill him. He used to regularly abuse his wife Sujata on these grounds.
On Wednesday, Bhoi had blood stools for a few times, upset he fought with his wife. Not satisfied, at 1 am that night when Sujata was feeding her two month-old daughter he hit her with an axe seriously injured her. He then dragged her the bleeding woman with her hair into the inner chamber of the temple and started praying.
Later, he locked her in a room with the crying baby and told her that he could sacrifice her on Thursday night as it was an auspicious day, Sujata has said in her statement to the police.
Sujata’s father and uncle came for a visit at 12 pm in the afternoon yesterday and found her in a semi-conscious state. They admitted her to the Belpahar community hospital and gave a written complaint to the police.
Belpahar police have recorded the statement of the victim and detained Bhoi for questioning.
