Prime accused in Kishore Nagar rape and murder case nabbed

Four days after the brutal rape and murder of a 25-year-old woman of Tarito village under Kishore Nagar police station limits in Cuttack district, the Cuttack Rural police on Friday arrested the prime accused from Mundali.

Disclosing the name of the accused as Durga Prasad Das, a resident of Tarito village, SP (Rural), Cuttack Gurudas Kundu said the police had suspected his involvement as he was found absconding since the day of the incident.

Giving details, the SP said that the accused, during interrogation, has revealed that he was angry with the victim as she repeatedly rejected his proposal for marriage. Finding her moving along the Mahanadi river bank alone in the evening on September 23, Das tried to rape her. But when she resisted with all her might, he killed her with a stone and threw the body into the river before fleeing the area.
“The accused has admitted to have committed the crime alone and denied the involvement of any accomplice”, he said, adding that the medical examination of the accused will be done later in the day. He would then be taken to the spot for the collection of details on the sequence of events that led to the crime.

“Police is waiting for the post mortem report to be ascertain whether the victim was raped before being killed”, the SP said.
