Prisoner dies during treatment in Odisha’s Cuttack, kin allege police excess

Cuttack: An undertrial prisoner who was lodged in Choudwar Circle Jail in Odisha’s Cuttack died today while undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College and Hospital here.

The deceased has been identified as Bharat Mandal of Telenga Bazar under Purighat police limits in the city. Family members of Bharat have alleged that he died after being beaten by cops.

Mandal was arrested on March 28 during blocking near Sunshine field here. Police had seized a country made revolver and two rounds of bullets from his possession.

As many as seven cases, including those of attempt to murder and offences under the Arms Act, were pending against him at the Purighat police station.
