Prisoner dies during treatment in Odisha’s Kandhamal; kin allege torture by police

Phulbani: An undertrial prisoner died while receiving treatment at the Kandhamal District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) on Wednesday.

The deceased was identified as Abhiram Dagyal of Dimirikuda village in Phiringia area of the district.

As per reports, he had surrendered before police after issuance of non-bailable warrant against him in a ganja smuggling case. He was subsequently sent to Phulbani Jail as an undertrial prisoner.

Abhiram’s health deteriorated during his time in jail, leading to his admission to the hospital where he succumbed to his illness, yesterday.

Allegations from Abhiram’s family suggest that his health was fine before being lodged in jail but deteriorated due to alleged torture by the police, including thrashing.

Phulbani SDPO Suprasanna Mallik said Abhiram was hospitalized due to illness. The autopsy report, once available, will shed light on whether his death was a result of police excess or pre-existing ailments, the official said.
