Prisoner escapes from court premises in Odisha

Bhubaneswar: An under trial prisoner (UTP) reportedly escaped from the premises of a court at Sambalpur in Odisha today.

The prisoner, identified as Gulgula Khan, escaped from a lavatory on the court premises by damaging the ventilator, sources said.

According to sources, Khan had been named as an accused in a murder case registered in 2001. He had been arrested and lodged in the jail in connection with the case.

Khan was granted conditional bail in 2010. But, he did not adhere to the conditions laid down by the court. The Town police in Sambalpur arrested him yesterday on a warrant issued by the court, sources said.

Khan was supposed to be produced before the court today.

“Khan entered into a toilet on the court premises to relieve himself. However, he escaped by damaging the ventilator even though the armed police personnel were waiting for him outside the toilet,” said a source.

Soon after the incident, the police have raided several places in the western Odisha city to nab the accused.
