Prisons DIG Anusuya Jena again probes into alleged death of UTP in Odisha’s Jajpur

Ragadi: Following a high-level inquiry, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Prisons Anusuya Jena again probed into the death of an undertrial prisoner (UTP), after the deceased’s family alleged that he was intentionally killed on December 6, 2023, in Jajpur Road Sub-Jail under Korei block of this district.

The inmate identified as Balaram Behera was found dead under mysterious circumstances.

The DIG reached the jail in the afternoon of Wednesday at around 2.00 pm and conducted the probe till 7.00 pm. She quizzed several staff and officials of the jail in this regard and returned thereafter.

Worth mentioning, the jail authorities earlier said the death of UTP Balaram was a case of demise by suicide. However, his family did not accept this version and raised objections to it. Brother of the UTP Dillip Kumar Behera had earlier lodged an FIR with Korei police against the jailer and a prisoner.

A petition was also filed with the SDJM court in Jajpur Road by Balaram’s family seeking justice.
