Probe begins into botched blood transfusion in Odisha

A five-member team of doctors today began probing in the case pertaining to transfusion of HIV-infected blood to a four-year-old thalassemia patient of Bhanjanagar in Odisha’s Ganjam district.

The team led by Berhampur City Hospital ADMO Dr. Saroj Mishra visited the blood bank at MKCG Medical College and Hospital here to conduct an inquiry into the incident.

According to reports, the four-year-old child was afflicted with thalassemia a few days after his birth and since then has been receiving blood transfusions apart from undergoing treatment for the disease.

The child had received blood transfusion on 71 occasions last year. The worrying factor is how the child got infected with the virus since both the parents are HIV negative.

“My son’s future has been pushed into the dark due to infected blood supplied by the blood bank. I had given an application for blood bank inquiry. They have told me that they will provide the report within five-six days. They have submitted all documents pertaining to blood transfusions given to my son and other documents for the inquiry team’s perusal,” said the four-year-old victim’s father.
