Puri minor girl rape case: Accused Mahesh Mohanty arrested

Puri: In a major development in the Puri minor girl rape case, police have arrested accused Mahesh Mohanty (35), informed Puri SP Kanwar Vishal Singh today.

Mohanty was apprehended from Puri-Bhubaneswar border area. Puri police had formed four teams to trace and nab him. Raids were conducted at various places inside and outside the Puri district to arrest the accused, the SP said.

Chargesheet of the case will be filed within twenty days. The case will be tagged as ‘Red Flag Case’, the police official added.

Mohanty, who hails from Jagatsinghpur district, has criminal antecedents and was recently released from jail.

He had allegedly raped a 5-year-old girl on the rooftop of her house at Sidha Bakula lane under Puri Town police limits on January 23.

The accused lived in a rented house at PWD Colony and was constructing his house near the victim’s residence. He was also acquainted with the girl’s family.

On the fateful day, he found the girl playing alone and took her to the rooftop, where he allegedly raped her.

Hearing the girl’s screams, her family members reached the spot following which Mohanty fled the place and later absconded.

The girl was rushed to the district headquarters hospital and later shifted to the SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack for further treatment.

The police had registered a case against the accused under Sections 376 of the IPC and 6 of POCSO Act.

Mohanty, a driver by profession, already has multiple cases pending against him.
