QAT foils dacoity bid in Odisha capital, three arrested

Quick Action Team (QAT) of the Twin City Commissionerate Police has arrested three members of a robbery gang from Infocity police limits in the Odisha capital late in the night on Tuesday.

They were planning to commit a major robbery in Nandan Vihar area under Infocity police limits, said Twin City police commissioner R P Sharma briefing newsmen here today.

The QAT has seized a 7.65 mm pistol, one .22 mm revolver, seven rounds of live ammunition, a bhujali, a mobile phone, a scooter, Rs 700 in cash and two bottles of liquor from them, Sharma said.

“Based on intelligence inputs the QAT team with Infocity police arrested three persons from Banaphul basti near Sikharchandi slum under Infocity police limits during patrolling late on Tuesday night while five of them were planning to attempt a robbery at a locked house in Nandan Vihar area. However two managed to flee. While one of those who fled is from Bihar, the other is from Odisha,” said the police commissioner.

The arrested have been identified as Sarada Moharana of Chandanpur and Dillip Dehury alias Salu of Barabana under Chandaka police limits and Sankar Maharana of Badhei Sahi of Patia under Chandrasekharpur police limits, Sharma informed.

“These persons have been booked under sections 399 and 402 of the IPC and section 25 of the Arms Act. Efforts are on to nab the other two,” he said.

Accused

During interrogations of the accused persons it has been revealed that the man from who has been residing Odisha for the last six years was involved in supply of firearms to criminals in the state.

“Since the person from Bihar has supplied firearms to these people we suspect him to be involved in smuggling of firearms from Bihar and supplying those to criminals here,” Sharma stated.

These persons were arrested during 27th operation of ‘Operation Black Smoke’ of the QAT.

Sharma said while QAT has seized 70 firearms in the course of the operation till date this year, it had seized 102 firearms last year.
