Raahgiri Day debuts in Odisha’s Silk City

Odisha’s Silk City became the third city in the state to celebrate Raahgiri Day where people from various walks of life participated in it.
Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) had made elaborate arrangement for safe and incident-free passage of the event.
The residents participated in activities like roller skating, cycling, painting, dancing, yoga and aerobics among other things.
The site near the Khallikote Autonomous College was chock-a-block with people from varied age groups.
Ganjam District Collector Prem Chandra Chaudhary, DIG (Southern Range) Amitabh Thakur, BMC Ollywood actor and Berhampur MP Siddhant Mohapatra, local MLA Dr Ramesh Chandra Chyau Patnaik, Mayor K Madhavi, Berhampur Development Authority (BDA) Chairman Subash Maharana, BDA Secretary Dipti Mahapatra and people from different walks life participated in the event.
“We have received an overwhelming response on the first Raahgiri Day in the city. We would be including more activities in subsequent weeks,” said Ganjam District Collector Prem Chandra Chaudhary.
While Rotary Club of Berhampur sponsored the first Raahgiri Day celebration, the Nehru Yuva Kendra provided volunteers for the day.
On the other hand, the capital city celebrated the 13th edition of Raahgiri Day in the city. Today’s theme was based on social issues. Various social organisations participated in the event with messages displayed on placards.
While a city-based voluntary organisation organised a programme on dowry issues, PECUC (People’s Cultural Centre) organised a unique event for slum children where they were engaged in sporting activities.
Bakul Foundation, Rotary International and Sambhav organised street plays on plantation and anti-liquor campaign.
Like other editions, the attendance for the Raahgiri Day in the capital city was at par with other Sundays. Denizens across all age groups were seen skating, practising yoga, cycling, street play, painting and jogging on the 1.2 km stretch from Master Canteen Square to Ram Mandir Square between 6.30 am and 9.30 am.
