Rakhal Mohanty, Suchi Das conferred with Upendra Bhanja Samman

For lifetime contribution in performing arts, eminent singer and music director Rakhal Chandra Mohanty and actor-director Sachi Das have been conferred with Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja Samman for 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Rakhal Chandra Mohanty received the award by Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi for 2014. Mohanty started his career with All India Radio in 1974 and worked in the Odia music industry. The renowned singer was the vocalist for Odissi dancers like Sanjukta Panigrahi, Sonal Mansingh and Madhavi Mudgal. The award carries a citation and a cash award of one lakh.

While Sachi Das who got the top award for 2015 began his career as theatre actor with Janata Rangamancha. Subsequently, he started a theatre organisation ‘Ebang Ame’. He has more than 400 jatra and 100 plays to his credit.

The award ceremony instituted by Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi yesterday is the State’s highest honour for performing artistes.

The Akademi also bestowed awards to renowned 31 artistes under different categories for 2014 and 2015, each were given a citation and a cash prize of Rs 30,000.
