Ratha Jatra 2021: Puri King to perform ‘Chhera Pahanra’ ritual this year

Puri: Ending all speculations Puri King Gajapati Dibyasingha Deb today stated he will perform ‘Chhera Pahanra’ (sweeping) ritual of the three chariots during the Ratha Jatra of Lord Jagannatha and His siblings in the pilgrim town this year.

Deb informed he will undertake the sweeping ritual atop the chariots during Bahuda Jatra (return car festival) as well.

As per the tradition, the three chariots rolls on only after the Puri King’s ‘Chhera Pahanra’ ritual during the annual car festival in Puri.

However, last year, the Puri King abstained from performing the hereditary ritual and the same was undertaken by a ‘Mudirasta’ servitor amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Deb welcomed an order passed by the Supreme Court which dismissed petitions seeking permission for Ratha Jatras at different places of Odisha.

The Ratha Jatra at Puri is scheduled to be held on July 12 this year.

As per a decision taken by the Odisha government, prohibitory orders under Sec 144 will be clamped in the town during the Ratha Jatra.
