Ravenshaw University student Damayanti Majhi becomes youngest Deputy Mayor of Cuttack

Cuttack: Scripting history, 21-year-old Damayanti Majhi, a student of the Ravenshaw University here, became the youngest Deputy Mayor of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, today.

Damayanti, BJD’s CMC Deputy Mayor candidate, was elected unopposed as Congress and BJP corporators boycotted the poll at the Shaheed Bhawan in Cuttack, where the election was held. This apart, the BJD had clear majority to ensure victory for the girl.

A tribal girl of Balisahi Slum in Cuttack and an M.Com student of the university, Damayanti had successfully contested the CMC polls held last month and was elected as the Corporator of Ward No. 49 of the civic body. She is also the youngest Corporator of the CMC.

Earlier in the day, BJD leader Subash Singh took oath as the Mayor of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC).

Sangramjit Nayak, Director of Municipal Administration, administered Singh the oath.

Singh had defeated his nearest rival Congress’ Giribala Behera by a margin of 45,206 votes in the CMC Mayor election.

He had received a total of 1,13,562 votes in his favour while Behera bagged 68,356 votes. BJP candidate Sritam Das was placed third securing 49,223 votes.

The BJD had registered comprehensive victory by winning the Mayor post and 38 corporator seats out of a total of 59 in the CMC polls.

Congress and BJP won eight and seven corporator seats, respectively. Independent candidate secured the remaining six corporator seats.
