Rayagada records all-time-high of 495 COVID-19 cases; 218 detected from 2 jails alone

Rayagada: Rayagada district, which reported first COVID-19 case on June 3, recorded an all-time-high of 495 cases, third highest single-day spike in the state today.

Of the total fresh cases, 218 have been detected from two jails alone. Sources said 157 persons, including five staff of Rayagada Sub-jail and 61 inmates from Gunupur Sub-jail have tested positive for the virus in the last 24 hours.

The patients have been kept in isolation inside the jails and are undergoing treatment. Besides, sanitization drive was carried out at both the jails to curb further spread of the virus.

It is pertinent to mention here that the district has been witnessing a steep rise in positive cases for the last couple of days. Over 100 cases are being reported from the district since August 15. It had registered 211 cases on August 19.

With detection of the fresh cases, the district’s tally surged to 4,215, including 1915 active cases. However, 2278 patients have recovered while 22 succumbed to the disease so far.
