Rebuked for PUBG gaming addiction, Odisha youth dies by suicide

Basudevpur: A youth allegedly took an extreme step in Basudevpur area of Bhadrak district today after his uncle stopped him from playing PUBG mobile game. The deceased, identified as Ganesh (20) was a resident of Panijharia village under Chandbali block in Bhadark district.

As per reports, Ganesh was working at a private company in Vishakhapatnam. However, following the lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic, Ganesh returned home two months back. He then went to the house of his maternal uncle, Ramesh and worked at a prawn processing factory in Dhamara area.

Ramesh was upset with Ganesh as most of the time the youth was playing PUBG Mobile game on his smartphone instead of going to the work. There were frequent arguments between Ganesh and Ramesh over the youth’s addiction to the mobile game.

Yesterday Ramesh scolded Ganesh again after finding him playing the PUBG instead of attending the work. Later Ganesh left the uncle’s place and went to his aunt’s house. When Ganesh’s aunt also reprimanded him for being irregular at the work, the youth returned to the prawn processing factory.

With a rope Ganesh today hung himself at a room on the premises of the prawn processing factory.
Some employees of the factory admitted Ganesh to the Basudevpur hospital in a critical condition where doctors declared him brought dead.
