India is celebrating its 73rd Republic Day this year as in doing so, its citizens celebrate the sovereignty and secularism of the democratic republic.

Republic Day was first celebrated on January 26, 1950. It was on this day that the Constitution of India came into effect. Dr BR Ambedkar headed the Drafting Committee of the Consititution. However, the Constitution was adopted by the Indian Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949. Hence, that day is observed as the Constitution Day.
