Restriction on kite flying in Odisha’s Cuttack; manja banned

Odisha Sun Times Bureau
Cuttack, Dec 2:

The Cuttack district administration has imposed restriction on flying of kites here besides banning use of manja (glass coated strings), plastic and china strings, informed district collector Nirmal Chandra Mishra today.

The collector has also ordered for curbs on flying of kites on rooftops. Open spaces will be identified for kite flying, Mishra said.

A special squad will be formed which would conduct raids on shops selling such threads. Action will be taken against those selling or using the killer threads, he added.

It may be recalled here that a six-year-old girl was killed after a glass-coated ‘manja’ thread slit her throat while she was travelling with her parents on a motorcycle on NH-5 near Telengapentha under Cuttack Sadar police station in January this year.

The girl’s throat sustained severe injuries because of the cut by the sharp string. The child succumbed to her injury at a private nursing home.
