Restriction on cremation of bodies at Puri Swargadwar withdrawn

Puri: In the unlock process with decline of daily COVID-19 cases in Puri, the district administration lifted the restriction imposed on cremation of bodies from outside the district at Swargadwar in the pilgrim town with effect from August 16, 2021.

“The restriction imposed on observance of the funeral rites of the deceased belonging to other districts/states at Swargadwar, Puri as well as immersion of ashes at Mahodadhi in order to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the district is hereby withdrawn in view of decreasing trend of COVID-19 positive cases in the Puri district as well as Puri Municipality area,” an official order by the District Magistrate & Collector stated today.

As per the order, maximum 10 persons will be allowed to accompany the body to Swargadwar for cremation.

The Collector also made it clear that only non-COVID bodies (the bodies of persons, who die of other diseases) will be allowed for cremation at Swargadwar in the holy town Puri with strict adherence to COVID-19 safety protocols.

The relatives will have to submit the necessary documents relating to non-Covid death of the deceased person at reception counter of Swargadwar Seva Samiti, Puri.

The attendees will have to follow the Covid appropriate behaviour such as wearing of face mask properly, hand sanitization and maintenance of social distancing of 2 meter etc.

The district administration had imposed the restriction on carrying out funeral rites of bodies at Swargadwar since April 25 due to upsurge in COVID cases in second wave of pandemic.
