Road safety: Two-month long special enforcement drive across Odisha from today

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Transport Authority has launched a two-month long special enforcement drive starting today to keep a check on road safety, reduce accidents and fatalities throughout the State. The initiative, which will be enforced throughout November and December, was taken considering the rise in road accidents during winter.
As per reports, a month-wise analysis of road accident statistics revealed that winter months specially from November to February, account for nearly 30 per cent of mishaps due to low visibility caused by fog and smog conditions. Increased vehicular movement to picnic spots and tourist destinations for the holiday season and drunken driving also lead to accidents.
Keeping these factors in mind, the STA launched a drive where safety measures like wearing of helmets, seat belt, drunken driving, overspeeding, use of mobile while driving, driving by juveniles, wrong side driving, driving without registration mark, etc will be monitored.
Informing the same, Additional Commisioner Transport, Enforcement and Road Safety said the main aim is to create a sense of responsibility among commuters for prevention of accidents during winter. The drive will be extensively carried out throughput the State with focus on National and State Highways. He appealed road users to follow traffic rules stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility. “The State Transport Authority will take stern action against those flouting Motor Vehicle Rules . The drive will be jointly conducted with Police near accident prone zones and major junctions of National Highways and State Highways,” the press release stated.
