Bhubaneswar, Apr 26:

The Odisha government has sanctioned payment of Rs 2 lakh as compensation to the next of kin of a woman who died after being transfused with blood other than her own group at the district headquarters hospital in Bhadrak.

The state government’s decision was taken in pursuance of the direction issued by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).

The NHRC’s direction to the state government was issued following a petition filed by well-known rights activist and lawyer Prabir Kumar Das.

In his petition Das had sought intervention of the Commission alleging Rajalaxmi Barik of Panchutikri village in Bhadrak district had died on June 28, 2012 following a mismatch in blood transfusion in a government hospital.

It may be mentioned here that Rajalaxmi Barik, wife of Rajendra Barik of Panchutikiri village in Bhadrak district died at the SCB Medical College and Hospital on June 28, 2012. She was shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital following complications after she was given B+ blood instead of her own group A+ at Bhadrak district headquarters hospital on May 4, 2012 while undergoing delivery.
