Rs 262 cr GST fraud unearthed in Odisha’s Rourkela; 1 held

Rourkela: The Central GST Intelligence unit today arrested a youth on charges of evading tax in Odisha’s Rourkela city. The accused, Santosh Kumar Gupta from Koelnagar in the city allegedly evaded taxes worth around Rs 262 crore by fraudulently issuing invoices of input tax credit (ITC) without actual supply of goods.

Santosh set up shell business organisations and issued fake bills and invoices without any movement of goods took place. Following his arrest, Santosh was produced before the court today.

Few days back, a vegetable seller of Rourkela fell prey to GST fraud as a notice of Rs 110 crore tax evasion was served to him.

The vegetable seller, Kartik Kamila, who runs a makeshift shop in the steel city, was fraudulently mentioned as the owner of a market complex at Koelnagar.

Earlier, scamsters targeted several students, housewives, owners of small eateries, labourers and auto-rickshaw drivers in similar manner.
