Rs 5 lakh interim compensation paid to family of Puri custodial death victim: Odisha govt to HC

Cuttack: The Odisha Government provided interim compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the alleged custodial death victim in Puri. This was informed by the Government counsel in the Orissa High Court during its hearing on the Puri custodial death.

The newly-appointed Puri SP, K. Vishal Singh in a reply before the court mentioned that the youth, K. Ramesh died due to head injury after falling on the ground.

As the Government counsel took more time to file a reply in the court in the case, the HC fixed December 14 as the next date for further hearing of the matter.

On the other hand, Petitioner Sarat Kumar Raiguru, who is an advocate from Puri, informed the HC that the Government issued a statement in the State Assembly saying that the alleged Puri Custodial death is being probed by the Puri JMFC.

Worth mentioning, the petitioner sought an impartial probe into the matter and adequate compensation for the family of the victim. Also, he prayed before the court to ensure stringent action is taken against the persons involved in the alleged custodial death.

The Chief Secretary, Home Secretary, Puri Collector and SP have been made parties in the case.
