RSP gas tragedy: NGT seeks report from plant authorities by Feb 11

Rourkela: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) to submit a report in connection with the gas mishap that claimed four lives at the plant earlier this month.

The NGT asked the plant authorities to submit the report by February 11.

Earlier, three senior officials of the plant have been suspended for their alleged negligence of duties that led to the mishap. Assistant Manager (Safety) Smruti Ranjan Sahu and two Deputy General Manager (DGM) rank officials- Gopabandhu Barik and Nabendu Das have bene placed under suspension.

On January 6, four workers died while six others fell sick following leakage of toxic gas at the Coal Chemicals Department of RSP. A total of 10 workers engaged at the plant contractually by a private construction company were affected due to the leakage of carbon monoxide gas. While six of them were taken to the dispensary of the plant, four workers died undergoing treatment at Ispat General Hospital (IGH).
