The marriage took place in Shaheed Nagar according to Odia traditions.

Fed up with the abuse at home, the girl had eloped with her boyfriend and had come down to Bhubaneswar after leaving a message for her father.

Nandita and Arpit both work in the same company in Bengaluru and have been in love for the past one and half years. But Nandita’s mother, a doctor in profession, never accepted the relationship and even went on to keep her under virtual house-arrest after injecting her with sedatives apart from abusing her mentally and physically.

Based on her mother’s written complaint in a Bengaluru police station, a two-member team of Bengaluru police had reached Bhubaneswar yesterday to take the girl back. They raided Arpit’s Sailashree Vihar residence with the help of the Chandrashekharpur Police and brought them to the police station.

The local cops, however, changed their mind and stopped co-operating with the police team from Bengaluru after Nandita informed the police that she loves Arpit had come down to Bhubaneswar of her own volition.

For once, the police played Good Samaritan. Chandrashekharpur Police not only warded off the pressure from Bengaluru police team, but also took them to the court to get their statements recorded and helped them to get legally married.

While the girl’s father, who is supporting of the marriage, reached Bhubaneswar last evening, the boy’s father is very happy with his son’s decision.

“I am very happy to have a daughter-in-law of my son’s choice,” said Purna Chandra Mohanty, the groom’s father.

In another incident, a girl from Bangalore had come down to the city chasing her reluctant boyfriend and had married him on December 17 after the intervention of cops and local NGOs.

Harisha, shame on that mother. What kind of mother injects her own daughter with sedatives? And she’s a doctor too. Wonder what she does with her patients. She should be locked up. Just because she’s a mother, it doesn’t mean she can abuse her daughter. The girl did the right thing.

Why should the girl be ashamed… I guess we should be ashamed of people like you Harish GK. Thanks to the Odisha police to understand and cooperate.
