The students, however, locked down the institute with college staff inside in retaliation. The situation only improved after the police reached the scene.

“We have been pressing ahead with a strike since past three days. The college has taken no action based on our complaint. The college authorities are seeking more time. How much more time do they need? We have started to lose hope on a favourable outcome,” said Diptirekha Patra, a pharmacy student.

She further explained that the students will continue to press for their demands that include a common room for the students, an ambulance and appointment of a doctor for the institute. “Action taken by the college authorities will bear no impact on our protest,” she added.

“It was an accident. There is hardly anything that the college can do. We have still taken time to look into the possibilities. It is not even three days yet. The students, however, have locked down the college and have vandalized the property,” said Principal of the college SK Kanungo.

It may be noted here that the students have been agitating since one of the students met with an accident three days back.
