Sankashti Chaturthi, also known as Sankatahara Chaturthi in south Indian states, is an auspicious festival for worshipping Lord Ganesha.

It is known as Angarki Chaturthi when the festival falls on a Tuesday and is considered to be the most auspicious of all the Sankashti Chaturthi days.

The celebrations are prevalent in both northern and southern states of India. It is celebrated on a grand scale in Maharashtra.

Chaturthi Tithi Begins – 10:26 PM on Nov 22, 2021.

Chaturthi Tithi Ends – 12:55 AM on Nov 24, 2021.

Moonrise on Sankashti Day – 09:08 PM.

Rituals of Sankashti Chaturthi:

Devotees get up early in the morning and worship Lord Ganesha. They observe a strict fast. Some devotees also observe a partial fast and only consume fruits, vegetables and roots of plants.

The Sankashti puja is done in the evening, after seeing the moon.

The idol of Lord Ganesha is decorated with Durva grass and flowers. Diyas are lit in front of the idol. Reciting Vedic mantras are also part of the rituals.

The devotees read the ‘vrat katha’ specific to the month while the fast is broken after worshipping Lord Ganesha in the evening and sighting the moon.

Modaks and other favourite eatables of Lord Ganesha are offered to the deity on the occasion.

After an aarti, prasad is distributed among all the devotees.

It is believed that worshipping Lord Ganesha on this day fulfils all wishes and results in a prosperous life.

Childless couples also observe Sankashti Chaturthi to be blessed with child.
