Scheme to protect elephants in Odisha soon

Bhubaneswar: In view of the rising cases of elephant deaths in the state, the Odisha Government has decided to come up with a new scheme ‘Gajabandhu Yojana’ soon.

Chief Wildlife Warden Ajay Mohapatra informed this here today.

Informing about the scheme, Mohapatra said common people will be engaged in the scheme. People will be given cash reward for providing information on movement of elephants. Besides, speed CCTVs and speed breakers will be installed in elephant corridors across the state.

In the latest major elephant death incident, three pachyderms were killed in a road accident in Keonjhar district on August 22.

Around 10 elephants while crossing NH-20 near Balijodi under Ghatagaon Forest Range were hit by a speeding truck and a bus late on August 22 night. While two of  them, including a female calf had died on the spot, another succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment the next day.
