“I am deeply saddened to learn of the demise of Mrinalini Mukherjee. She leaves behind a vacuum in the world of art. Her artistic works brought laurels to her not only in India, but in the outside world also,” Sharma said in a statement.

“Her artistic qualities provide her a unique place in contemporary Indian art. My deep sympathies are with the art lovers and all others who admire her work,” he added.

Mukherjee was suffering from a prolonged lung problem and died Monday in the capital. She was 65.

The artist was known for her sculptures knotted with hemp fibre, ceramics and cast bronze.

Sharma also said: “We should work in the direction of promotion and conservation of such artistic works which are left behind as a legacy by such great artists.”

A solo exhibition of the artist titled “Transfigurations: The Sculpture of Mrinalini Mukherjee” is currently on display at the National Gallery of Modern Art here. (IANS)
