Bhubaneswar, Mar 1:

Commerce and Transport Minister Subrat Tarai on Saturday inaugurated the second full-fledged Regional Transport Office (RTO) in the capital city at a rented house at Patia near KIIT square here.

Speaking to media persons after the inauguration, the Transport minister said opening of the new RTO, Bhubaneswar-II office will provide both online and offline services to meet the growing demands of the rapidly burgeoning population in the city. Besides, it would also help reduce the work load of the existing RTO, Bhubaneswar-I, he said.tarai

Tarai said the state government had planned to start two more Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in the state soon. These RTO offices will be opened at Talcher in Angul district and Jajpur town in Jajpur district. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, it may be noted, had unveiled an RTO office at Bhanjanagar in Ganjam recently.

The new office will have jurisdiction over Jatni, Tamando, Khandagiri, Infocity, Chandrasekhapur, Chandaka, Nandankanan, Nayapalli and Mancheswar police limits.

Sanjaya Kumar Behera, who was appointed as the first RTO of the new RTO office-II, informed that as the number of motor vehicles had increased in the city to about 9 lakhs, the new office will reduce the work load of the existing one.

“From today, we will start providing services like issue of driving license, fitness certificates, learning licenses, vehicle permits, renewal of permits and license along with enforcement drive,” Behera said.

Apart from one assistant regional transport officer and one motor vehicles inspector, one senior and two junior clerks will man the new office. The staff strength will be increased according to the requirement later, Behera added.

Vehicles registered in RTO Bhubaneswar-II office will bear the code OD-33, while those registered at existing RTO Bhubaneswar-I will continue to bear OD-02.

On its inaugural day, Satyabrat Mohapatra and Chanchal Preet received a driving license and a learning license respectively from the Transport minister from the new RTO office.

Among others, MP Prasanna Patasani, MLA Bhubaneswar North Bhagirathi Badajena, MLA Bhubaneswar Middle Bijaya Kumar Mohanty, MLA Ekmra Ashok Chandra Panda and Mayor BMC Ananta Narayan Jena were present on the occasion.

It seems the authorities deciding upon the location and jurisdiction of the new RTO office have not applied their mind well or there was some extraneous pressure. Jatni, Tomando, Khandagiri areas are at the other extreme to Patia. For the people residing in these areas the existing RTO office is nearer, why they are sought to be penalised ?
