Security guard provides ‘healthcare services’ at Nilagiri sub-divisional hospital sans doctors

Balasore: A security guard has been allegedly providing healthcare services to a number of patients at Nilagiri sub-divisional hospital (SDH) of Balasore district. A video of the so-called ‘multitasking’ man went viral on social media, today.

At times, the guard is also seen working as a colour mason in the government-run health facility.

A source said that hundreds of patients from nearby areas come to the hospital every day. As Nilagiri is a densely tribal-populated region, most of the patients from here are poor. A newly-constructed Out-Patient Department (OPD) building has failed in catering to the needs of local people.

Patients are often seen receiving treatment on the verandah of the hospital. The SDH has been facing an acute staff crunch. However, a security guard treating patients has raised the eyebrows of many.

The security guard usually checks blood pressure in the absence of doctors and nursing staff. He also paints different hospital equipment including cots, the attendant of a patient said.

When contacted, Nilagiri Sub-divisional Medical Officer (SDMO) Sarojini Pradhan said, “I will probe the allegations and take appropriate steps.”
