Senior journalist & author Basudev Mahapatra breathes his last

Bhubaneswar: Noted journalist Basudev Mahapatra passed away in Bhubaneswar, today. He is survived by his wife Sujata, who works as a senior reporter with an Odia news channel, and their son.

Mahapatra was sick for the last few days and he complained of severe chest pain in the morning. The eminent journo was immediately admitted to Capital Hospital in Unit 6 locality here. Doctors at the government-run health facility later declared him ‘dead’, a family member informed.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik condoled the sad demise of Mahapatra. It is a great loss to the field of journalism, which cannot be recovered. Patnaik expressed his compassion for the bereaved family and prayed that the noble soul may rest in peace, Chief Minister’s Office said in a tweet.

Mahapatra was born at a village in Balugaon of Khordha district. He started his career as a journalist in print media after completing his school education at Godabarish Vidyapitha and post-graduation from Berhampur University in Ganjam. He worked for both English and Odia newspapers. He ran his own web news channel and freelanced for different national and local media.

The senior scribe was known for his grassroots-level development reports and analysis. He authored several articles in English. He had also carved a niche in environmental journalism.

A pall of gloom descended on the journalist fraternity after news about his death spread.
