Septuagenarian dies, son critical in bear attack in Odisha’s Nuapada

Bhubaneswar: A 70-year-old man died and his son sustained critical injuries in bear attack at a village in Nuapada district of Odisha today.

The deceased has been identified as Ghanshyam Patel of Birunapadar village. Ghanshyam’s son Chayatu Patel (48) sustained grievous injuries in the incident, sources said.

The incident took place when father-son duo went to take bath in a pond near Bijakhaman forest in the morning, villagers said.

A wild bear attacked the father-son duo near the pond. By hearing their screaming, the villagers reached the spot and tried to chase the bear away with bamboo sticks, sources said.

Ghanshyam died on the spot. However, the villagers managed to rescue Chayatu with multiple injuries and rushed him to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Komana. Later, Chayatu shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) after his condition deteriorated, sources added.

Expressing anger over the incident, the locals blocked National Highway-353 at Birunapadar and sought Rs 20 lakh compensation for the deceased’s family. They also sought free treatment to the injured.
