Sex videos and controversies in Odisha this year

Bhubaneswar: The outgoing year 2017 witnessed several sex videos and controversies grabbed media attention. Be it Bhubaneswar Mayor’s alleged sex video, which was claimed to have link with engineering student Rishi murder case or other viral videos including ITER sex video, these reports were in the headlines throughout the year.

Mayor Ananta Jena storm over sex video

The year began with uproar, series of protests and demonstrations by the Congress, National Students Union of India (NSUI) members and BJP leaders seeking resignation of Bhubaneswar Mayor Ananta Narayan Jena for his alleged link with murder of engineering student Ashutosh Mohanty alias Rishi.

The student congress circulated the video clip in December last year and claimed that the person seen in the video was Jena. After the video went viral on social media, NSUI members staged demonstrations against BJD demanding Jena’s resignation from his post.

However, Jena refuted the allegations saying ‘the person in the video has no resemblance with him’.

“These allegations are baseless and concocted. The person in the video has no resemblance with me. He has a big belly. His nose has no resemblance to mine,” Jena said.

The video was released by a website on niankhunta.com shows Jena in a sexual act with a woman.

ITER sex video

The sex video of two engineering students studying at Institute of Technical Education & Research (ITER) was the talk of the town. The accused Aditya Raj, who shot the video, was arrested by the Khandagiri police. The statements and revelations made by Aditya and his girlfriend who was featured in the video, raised many eyebrows.

Mayurbhanj viral videos

A video featuring a girl being stripped naked by a group of youths in presence of her beau went viral on WhatsApp.

Later, Twin City Commissioner of Police (CP) YB Khurania made it clear that video was shot in Mayurbhanj district. The video showed that the girl was forced to remove her clothes and the incident was recorded on mobile phone by the youths and they also clicked some photos.

Less than 24 hours after the arrest of three persons in connection with Mayurbhanj viral video, another video of similar incident in the district surfaced and went viral on social media in November.

In the 35 seconds-video, a youth covering his face with a piece of cloth was seen grabbing the hands of the girl forcibly after removing her clothes while some other persons were seen recording the incident with a mobile phone and clicking photos of the victim.

Keonjhar sex video

Another video of a similar incident in Keonjhar district surfaced and went viral as well on social media. In the video, the wrongdoers were seen forcing a girl to remove her clothes at a forest in the district. Some of them were also seen forcing her for physical relationship with them.

Medical student’s sex video

A video featuring intimate moments of a girl student of a private medical college with a youth went viral on WhatsApp and Facebook in November.

Viral video of Balasore school girl

Two video clips of two different girls including a school girl circulated on social media sites raised several questions on efficiency of police to deal with the growing number of cyber crimes in Odisha.

While one of the videos consists private moments of a reported employee of a finance company and her male partner, the other one features obscene visuals of an apparent school girl of Balasore district.

Molestation video of college girl

A video featuring molestation of a college girl by a group of youths in a secluded area in Bargarh district was hit media headlines in December this year.

The video showed a group of men chasing, molesting and harassing a college student who is in her uniform despite her repeated pleas to spare her.

Around 10 to 15 young men were also seen hurling abuses at the girl who was running on the road to escape from the clutches of the mob.

Soon after the media highlighted the incident, Bargarh police woke up and swung into action.

In the wake of viral sex videos doing the rounds on social media sites, Odisha police on Nov 22 issued advisory to all the district SPs and public against circulation of such videos on the internet.

Odisha DGP RP Sharma warned to take strong action against persons found circulating the objectionable pictures and videos on social networking sites like Facebook and WhatsApp.

A cyber forensic division became functional on the premises of the State Forensic Laboratory to get the reports soon that will help police in examining and investigation in the cyber crime cases.
