Shoes hurled at Odisha Assembly Speaker by BJP MLAs in House

Bhubaneswar: In an unprecedented and unpleasant turn of events, shoes were hurled at the Speaker of Odisha Assembly by members of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during the House proceedings today.

Reportedly,  BLP  MLAs Jaynarayan Mishra and Bishnu Sethi hurled shoes at Speaker Surjya Narayan Patro as a mark of protest.

After an adjournment motion brought by Congress was rejected by the Speaker, the Opposition MLAs went berserk and staged protest. They also alleged that Odisha Lokayukta (Amendment) Bill was passed in the House without debate on the same. The situation turned ugly when the two BJP MLAs reportedly stood on their seats and hurled shoes, papers, pen and earphone at the Speaker as a mark of protest.

“I don’t know what exactly I have thrown at the Speaker but I have not done anything wrong. The Speaker deserved this kind of behavior,” said MLA Jaynarayan Mishra.

However, Bishnu Sethi refuted the allegation and said, “I haven’t thrown shoes at him (Speaker). I just threw a pen and headphone.”

Condemning the act, Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Leader Narasingha Mishra said, “The incident is very unfortunate.”

Commenting on the matter, the Speaker said, “I am examining the photos. Law will take its own course and nobody can stop it.”
