Shortage of doctors hits health services in Odisha’s G.Udayagiri

G. Udayagiri: At a time when Odisha government is spending crores of rupees to ensure that people of the State get better healthcare facilities, it seems the effect of the move is negligent in tribal dominated G. Udayagiri area of Kandhamal district.

Reportedly, four specialist posts at the G. Udayagiri Community Health Centre have been lying vacant for past few years. The authorities are running healthcare services at the hospital by hiring MBBS doctors only. No Gynecologist has been appointed at the hospital, adding to the woes of locals.

“Despite repeated requests to the district administration, no one is paying any heed. In this area, there are many sickle cell patients who need blood transfusion regularly. As there is no blood bank in the hospital, these patients have to travel either to Phulbani or Berhampur,” said a local ruefully.

Echoing similar views another local said, “There are facilities at the G. Udayagiri CHC only to treat common diseases such as fever and diarrohea. If any critical case arrives here, the pateient is immediately referred to MKCG hospital in Berhampur or Phulbani hospital.”

Official quarters for doctors and staff of the hospital have been in the middle of construction for the past 12 years.
