While the salaries of siksha sahayaks has been raised from Rs 4, 000 to Rs 5, 200 per month, salaries of junior teachers has been hiked from Rs 4, 500 to Rs 7, 000, School and Mass Education minister Rabinarayan Nanda announced in the state Assembly today. The hike, to take effect from this month, will benefit about 33, 000 siksha sahayaks and 36, 000 junior teachers, he said.

While Odisha Siksha Sahayak Sangha president Prashant Kumar Sundaray has welcomed the government decision, Opposition leader Bhupinder Singh said the decision had been taken with an eye on the election. “Why didn’t they do it earlier when it has been a long standing demand? If the government was really serious about the welfare of siksha sahayaks, it would have implemented it with retrospective effect,” Singh said.
