Software engineer Sweta suicide case: Soumyajeet approaches Orissa HC for anticipatory bail

Cuttack: Soumyajeet Mohapatra, the alleged boyfriend of software engineer Sweta Utkal Kumari, has approached the Orissa High Court for anticipatory bail on a case pertaining to her suicide.

On the basis of an FIR lodged by the family members of Sweta, Chandrasekharpur police in Bhubaneswar have registered a case against Soumyajeet under Section 306 (abetment of suicide) of the IPC.

Soumyajeet had earlier appeared before the police for interrogation in connection with the case.

Sweta was found hanging inside her apartment in Sailashree Vihar area here on August 21. Police have reportedly seized a diary from the house, in which it has been mentioned that she was in a relationship with Soumyajeet, who hails from Sambalpur. The software engineer hailed from Bhadrak and was working as a Technology Analyst with a reputed company here.

Her brother alleged that Soumyajeet was threatening her to make photos of their intimate moments viral, for which she took the extreme step.

“Soumyajeet had kept photos of intimate moments between him and my sister. He was demanding money from her by threatening her to make the photos viral if she didn’t agree to his demands,” said Sweta’s brother.

“They met each other in 2018 while both were working with an IT major in Bhubaneswar. It was a one-sided love affair from Soumyajeet’s side for the first 7-8 months. He then threatened my sister that he would end his life if she didn’t love him. This is how the relationship came into existence. We came to know about it after one and a half years,” the deceased’s brother said.

Levelling similar allegations against Soumyajeet, Sweta’s father said, “He had quit job for pursuing MBA. He then started extorting money from my daughter, for which she died by suicide.”

“I had gone to Soumyajeet’s house to meet his family members for his wedding with my daughter. However, they harassed me and demanded Rs 30 lakh for the marriage. I had expressed my inability to give them the amount,” Sweta’s father added.
